About Michael Hydorn

Michael Hydorn, an author in diverse fields, grew up outside of Holland, Michigan. He is an avid SCUBA diver, snorkeler, and sailor; loving and appreciating all things maritime.  Retired from 25 years at the United States Patent and Trademark Office, he was a former patent examiner and a lecturer of Intellectual Property. Additionally, for over a dozen years he was an adjunct professor for Germanna Community College at its Fredericksburg, Virginia campus, teaching a variety of chemistry courses. He began his writing in the late 1970’s with books and materials in physical chemistry, organic chemistry and saltwater fishkeeping.

Michael’s newest book Saltwater Fishkeeping: A Guide for Young Adults and Teens is aimed towards those who wish to keep saltwater fishes for the first time, and it published as a Kindle eBook in August 2017.

Michael also has two new saltwater (marine) aquarium fishkeeping books in progress forthcoming soon as eBook (Amazon Kindle) publications. One is aimed towards experienced saltwater fishkeepers who wish to expand their skills by keeping pico-aquaria, and it is set to publish in fall 2023; and the other is aimed towards anyone wishing to inexpensively keep saltwater fishes, and it is set to publish in late fall 2023. Michael also has a freshwater aquarium fishkeeping book in progress, and it is set to publish in summer 2024.

Michael has been keeping saltwater and freshwater fishes for over 45 years. He began fishkeeping as a young teen inspired by his father – the late Allan E. Hydorn, who was also a fishkeeper and a breeder of Siamese Fighting Fish (Beta splendens) in the 1950’s and 60’s. Their early forays in breeding Firemouth Cichlids (Thorichthys meeki) in the late 1960’s, and in keeping many species of saltwater and freshwater fishes made the author a life-long fishkeeping enthusiast.

Together with co-author Douglas A. Salser, Michael is also working on a series of Intellectual Property (IP) books and supplemental materials (likely to publish fall/winter 2023). Michael Hydorn and Douglas Salser are the creators of the “Take a SIP” presentations series given internationally as Seminars for Inventors on Patents and Seminars on Intellectual Property. See their website www.ProfSIP.com for more information, and to set a speaking engagement with them.

In the Fall of 2022, Michael became a Registered RV (Recreational Vehicle) Technician with the RVTAA (www.RVTAA.org), and in January 2023, he became a Certified RV Inspector with the NRVIA (www.NRVIA.org).

Michael holds a Ph.D. in Biological Oceanography, as well as a Ph.D. and D.Sc. in Medicinal Chemistry.  He is the author of the limited-printing, now out-of-print books: A Resource Book for Physical Chemistry, and Keeping a Saltwater Aquarium. And he is a co-author with the late Allan E. Hydorn, Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry, of the limited-printing, out-of-print book: Safe & Environmentally-friendly Organic Chemistry Laboratory Experiments. Nonetheless, he created an eBook version for his Organic Chemistry Laboratory classes at Germanna Community College. He is currently authoring new versions of the physical chemistry and organic chemistry laboratory books.
